Vienna’s Fashion: Austrians, including retired fashion enthusiasts, are making an effort to keep Vienna’s fashion culture alive.
Helmut Lang, Austria’s only globally recognized designer, left Vienna for New York eight years ago, leaving the city’s fashion scene without a major figure. Despite this, the city continues to host Vienna Fashion Week, albeit on a smaller scale compared to other European cities like Milan, where hundreds of collections are showcased.
Vienna’s Fashion, One of the notable efforts to revive Vienna’s fashion scene comes from the city’s retiree fashion club. The club’s members, mostly in their seventies and eighties, presented a collection during Vienna Fashion Week, emphasizing sustainability and individuality, as they focus on reusing and reinventing older pieces. According to Adelina Komitova, the head of the retiree fashion club, the goal is to distance fashion from fast trends and embrace a more enduring and personal style.

However, not everyone shares this optimism. Some Vienna-based designers are struggling to revive the city’s former fashion prestige, especially with minimal government funding and high production costs compared to other fashion capitals like France and Italy. Even Monika Bayer, a designer who left Vienna for New York a decade ago, voiced her frustrations, noting that the local fashion scene offers few opportunities for designers like her to thrive.

Many designers, like Anita Egner, are still working to keep the city relevant in the industry despite the challenges.

Lang, who rose to fame in Paris in 1986, felt disconnected from Vienna’s fashion culture, which he found stifling. He left the country eight years ago and has no apparent successor among Austrian designers. Despite these challenges, younger Austrian designers like Anna-Marie Bercks and Petar Petrov are experimenting with new ideas, but they have yet to make a significant impact on the international stage.

Robert Lackner from the Independent Fashion Chamber emphasized that the event offers an opportunity for emerging talent to grow and present their designs to a wider audience.
