According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of physical disability in the United States. However, up to 80% of strokes are preventable. The association recently released an updated guideline for stroke prevention, the first since 2014, as reported by Fox News.
Dr. Cheryl Bushnell, a neurologist and head of the stroke division at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina, stated, “The key to stroke prevention is recognizing risk factors and accessing medical care to manage and treat those risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.”

Dr. Bradley Serwer, a Maryland-based cardiologist, commented on the updated guidelines, highlighting their unique aspects but noting that they focus mainly on established prevention strategies, emphasizing diet improvement, physical activity, tobacco avoidance, better sleep quality, and managing known risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Stroke Prevention Tips, Bushnell emphasized that since the last guideline update, new clinical trials have led to the development of medications that help treat conditions like diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol, potentially reducing the risk of both stroke and heart disease. Examples include GLP-1 receptor agonists, which effectively lower blood sugar and aid significant weight loss, and PCSK9 inhibitors, which reduce harmful LDL cholesterol and lower stroke risk.
Stroke Prevention Tips, The American Stroke Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, or a combination of both, to prevent stroke. The updated guidelines also caution against prolonged sitting during waking hours.
Additionally, the guidelines include advice for pregnant women to help manage high blood pressure and monitor pregnancy complications. All women are advised to screen for early ovarian insufficiency conditions such as early or premature menopause and endometriosis.

She concluded, “The point is that all these recommendations not only help prevent stroke but also improve brain health since the risk factors for dementia are essentially the same as those for stroke.”
