Night Owls Brain Function: The Brain Function Of Night Owls Is Better Than Early Risers
Night Owls Brain Function: People who sleep between 7 and 9 hours per night appear to perform best on tests that measure intelligence, reasoning skills, reaction times, and memory.
According to a new research, night owls are probably more alert than early risers. In addition, people who are more alert and active at night performed better in cognitive tests.
Night Owls Brain Function, Sky News writes that a number of researchers, led by academics from Imperial College London, examined the data of thousands of people who participated in the British Biobank research to investigate sleep patterns and cognitive power of the brain.
They studied the relationship between sleep duration, sleep quality and habits of sleep and wakefulness (chronotype), then based on this timing, they divided people into “wake up”, “nocturnal” and “middle” groups, which were neither in the first group nor in The second group was divided.

Academics at Imperial College London found that night owls and those in the middle group had “better cognitive function,” according to the study, published in the journal BMJ Public Health.

Dr Raha West, from Imperial College’s Department of Surgery and Cancer and lead author of the study, said: “This study showed that adults who are naturally more active in the evening and at night, when we call it ‘nocturnal’, perform better on cognitive tests than people who do not. They act as so-called early risers who wake up early in the morning.
He says that sleep schedules are not just personal preferences and affect our cognitive performance. “As you understand and live by natural sleep tendencies, remember to get enough sleep, not too short and not too long,” she says. This point is very important in keeping the brain healthy and its optimal functioning.
Night Owls Brain Function, The researchers examined the data of about 27 thousand people and their performance in the tests according to the reports they gave about the duration, pattern and quality of their sleep. They say being female, getting older, having angina (chest pain), high blood pressure, and diabetes weaken cognitive function.
Professor Docking Ma, from Imperial College London, said: “We found that sleep duration has a direct impact on brain function and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is critical to strengthening and protecting the brain. In order to improve the sleep pattern, ideally we want to investigate the path of interventions in people.”
