Liquid Eyeliner: From Peak Popularity To Decline Among Generation Z

Liquid eyeliner, known for its sharp and precise lines, was once a signature makeup trend embraced by many celebrities like Taylor Swift and Adele. However, this iconic style, which once defined beauty, is now seeing a decline in popularity, particularly among Generation Z.

Eye makeup, always a key element of beauty, has undergone significant changes over the years. With the rise of a new generation of cosmetic consumers, there is a noticeable difference in the makeup styles preferred by Generation Z compared to Millennials. One such difference is the approach to liquid eyeliner, which was once a symbol of beauty but is now less prominent in the makeup routines of Generation Z. (Generation Z generally refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, while Millennials, or Generation Y, refers to those born between 1981 and 1996.)

Liquid eyeliner, with its sharp and precise lines, was a signature look for many famous personalities like Taylor Swift and Adele. This style gave a bold and beautiful appearance to the eyes and was a major beauty trend for years. However, with the emergence of Generation Z, this classic approach has been replaced by softer, more natural styles.

Lynette Hoyle, a content creator on TikTok, expressed concern in a viral video, questioning whether the cat-eye look with liquid eyeliner is still in style. She asked her younger audience to enlighten her on the topic. Younger users responded by suggesting that she opt for a softer look with a subtle brown eyeshadow or pencil liner.

Jackie Alves, a makeup artist, confirmed in an interview with Newsweek that Generation Z favors softer, more natural makeup. She noted that the era of glitz and glam from 2016, characterized by bright colors and sharp lines, has come to an end. Today, simple makeup with soft shadows and smoky brown eyeliner has taken its place. This shift towards a more natural look has not only affected liquid eyeliner but has also pushed eyeshadow and eyeliner on the lower lid to the sidelines.

Shana Sako, founder of The Buyer Insider, explained the difference in makeup preferences between Generation Z and Millennials in an interview with Newsweek. She mentioned that as each generation ages, especially when job and family responsibilities increase, they tend to choose a style of dressing and makeup that doesn’t take much time. She believes that Millennials still care about fashion, but not as much as Generation Z, who are always seeking the latest and most modern trends in the fashion world.

Although liquid eyeliner has not entirely fallen out of fashion, it has clearly given way to softer styles. These changes highlight how each generation has a different approach to beauty and makeup based on their preferences and needs.
