Key Winter Haircare Tip: How To Take Care Of Hair During Winter?
Key Winter Haircare Tip: Focus on Hydration, as the Cold Weather Can Dry Out Your Scalp!
In my teenage years and even into my early twenties, I always decided to cut a significant portion of my hair during the winter months.
Whenever I made this decision, I knew I was going against the norm, as most of my friends opted for summer haircuts—until one day, while chatting with my hairstylist, I brought this up. They pointed out that, in fact, winter might be a better time for haircuts than summer.
Key Winter Haircare Tip, Their reason was that during the winter, people tend to use more heat on their hair to avoid going out with wet hair in the cold, which means more blow-drying and other heat-styling methods. In contrast, wet hair in the summer is often seen as a way to cool down, and people who swim by the sea are more likely to avoid heat tools and simply tie their hair back in a ponytail.
For years, I held onto this mindset, believing it was the key to having healthy hair. However, according to experts, there’s no universally “best” or “worst” time to cut your hair. Tukia Allen, a trainer at the Aveda Institute of Art and Science in Atlanta, Georgia, who teaches aspiring hairstylists.

Does Timing Really Matter For Haircuts?
Allen explained that it doesn’t matter whether you decide to cut your hair in winter or summer. “There really isn’t a better time to cut your hair,” she said.
Key Winter Haircare Tip, The real issue people should pay attention to is how they care for their hair each season, as it changes from one to the next. During winter, the number one recommendation for hair is to focus on hydration, as the colder weather can dry out the scalp.
Winter Challenges For Hair
Key Winter Haircare Tip, Another issue during the winter season is the accessories we wear, like hats and scarves, which can tug at the hair, making it more prone to breakage and split ends.
“We wrap scarves around our necks, which increases friction and pulling on the hair shaft,” Allen explained. “So when you throw a scarf around your neck, it can grab or stick to some hair strands. You need to be mindful of this.”
Key Winter Haircare Tip, To avoid excessive hair loss, she recommended using a type of hair oil to reduce the friction and pulling caused by hats and scarves. Allen compared haircare to skincare, highlighting their similarities.
“When we touch our skin and haven’t applied hydration, it shows,” she said. “The same is true for hair. If we hydrate it, it’s protected. This adds a layer of smoothness, which counteracts the friction and pulling caused by hats, scarves, headbands, and elastic items.”
Hair Loss In Winter: Natural Or A Concern?
Key Winter Haircare Tip, Allen also noted that shedding between 100 and 150 hairs per day is normal and part of the hair cycle. Another thing to consider is that the amount of hair you’re losing may already be natural, and hats or scarves just “highlight” the shedding.
Even though it may not matter whether people cut their hair in winter or summer, that doesn’t mean they should visit the salon less frequently for regular trims during the colder months.
Key Winter Haircare Tip, “You might not shampoo your hair as much in the winter as you do in the summer,” Allen said, “but trimming your hair should follow the same routine.”
By focusing on hydration and mindful care, you can keep your hair healthy and vibrant even in the coldest months of the year.
