A new study from Ohio State University has shown that some seemingly “healthy” food choices may contain high amounts of added sugars and saturated fats.

According to the New York Post, the “2020-2050 Dietary Guidelines for Americans” recommends reducing added sugar and saturated fat intake to less than 10% of daily calories. However, only 30-40% of American adults adhere to this guideline, and those who don’t are at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

Hidden Sugars And Saturated Fats, Recent research from Ohio State University reveals that “hidden” sources are responsible for this issue, causing people to exceed the recommended limits without realizing it.

This study, published last month in the journal Nutrients, identified not only clearly harmful sources like cheese and soda but also seemingly harmless ones in terms of saturated fats and sugars, such as chicken breast and ketchup.

Hidden Sugars And Saturated Fats, Christopher Taylor, the lead author of the study, says, “Chicken breast is known to be a food with very low saturated fat content, yet it still contains some saturated fat. Therefore, being aware of how foods with lower amounts of saturated fats slowly and stealthily add these fats to our diet is helpful.”

Taylor and his team analyzed dietary data from over 36,600 American adults who participated in a nutrition survey from 2005 to 2018. The main objective of this research was to design a research tool to simplify dietary assessments; however, it also encouraged consumers to pay attention to nutritional labels on foods and to be vigilant about the sources of added sugars and saturated fats in their diet.

Hidden Sugars And Saturated Fats, The researchers noted in their findings, “Nearly half of the added sugar intake came from five sources: sodas, sweetened teas, fruit juices, cakes and pastries, sugar, and honey. The main sources of added sugar for those over 70 years old were also ice cream and frozen dairy desserts, cookies, jams, and syrups.”

The study showed that tomato-based condiments (like ketchup), whole grain and bran biscuits, energy drinks, and yeast breads also contribute to added sugar consumption.

Attention should also be given to saturated fats in various sausages, cream substitutes, fried potatoes, and whole milk.

Hidden Sugars And Saturated Fats, Based on these findings and results, the team is working on designing an app to help users track the specific nutrients of concern (such as sugar and saturated fats) in all foods, enabling them to make smarter and more informed dietary choices.
