According to two new studies that followed nearly 750,000 people for 16 years, people who drink the most coffee were less likely to die than those who didn’t drink coffee at all, or who drank the least amount of coffee.
According to Reuters, these results do not necessarily mean that coffee directly prevents death, but it can be relaxing for people who cannot go through the day without coffee.

The results showed that men who reported the most coffee consumption had a 12% lower risk of death compared to men who did not drink coffee. The risk was seven percent lower in women who drank the most coffee compared to women who did not drink coffee.
“Although coffee drinking habits vary from country to country, the researchers observed a consistent relationship,” said lead author Neil Murphy of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France.

In this study, researchers analyzed the data of 185,885 African Americans, Native Hawaiians, Japanese-Americans, Latinos, and whites between the ages of 45 and 75. During this 16-year follow-up, 58,397 people died from this group.
According to the results of this study, people who drank one cup of coffee a day were 12% less likely to die than those who did not drink coffee, and people who drank two or more cups of coffee were 18% less likely to die.
Setiawan also points out that their studies cannot show what is behind the connection between drinking coffee and reducing the risk of death.

However, research shows that similar patterns of reduced risk of death were seen in people who drank decaffeinated coffee.
Lichtenstein says that may be because people who drink coffee are less likely to reach for other higher-calorie beverages, such as juice.
