A new study has shown that children who consume too much oats, bananas, and yogurt are at risk of developing type 1 diabetes. This study also identified wheat as a risk factor for the autoimmune form of diabetes (type 1 diabetes).

Suvi Virtanen and her colleagues at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare studied the diets of 5,674 Finnish children genetically predisposed to type 1 diabetes from birth to six years of age.

Consumption Of Oats And Bananas, Over the course of the study, researchers found that 94 children developed type 1 diabetes by the age of six, and 206 other children developed some form of islet autoimmunity (where the immune system attacks the beta cells in the islets of Langerhans, potentially causing damage to these cells), which could lead to the onset of type 1 diabetes.

According to Financial Express, Virtanen said: “We found that many of the foods associated with an increased risk of type 1 diabetes and disease progression are considered part of a healthy diet.”

This could be because berries are generally free from the pesticides found on other fruits, which are inflammatory.

According to Virtanen, it is important to determine which component in these foods is responsible for this connection. If berries contain a specific protective factor, that substance or the berries themselves could be used to prevent type 1 diabetes.
