Ed Sheeran Halted: British pop star Ed Sheeran was halted by Indian police while attempting to busk in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Authorities cited the lack of necessary permissions for the impromptu performance. A video showing a police officer unplugging Sheeran’s microphone in Bengaluru’s Church Street, a bustling shopping and entertainment district, quickly went viral.
Ed Sheeran Halted, Local officials revealed that Sheeran’s team had submitted a request to perform on the street, but it was denied due to concerns over potential congestion in the area. However, Sheeran clarified on Instagram that the busking session had been pre-arranged and that they had received prior approval. “We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before,” he wrote. “It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight.”

The incident occurred just before Sheeran’s scheduled concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru as part of his Mathematics Tour.

However, PC Mohan, a local Member of Parliament from the ruling BJP party, defended the police, stating, “Even global stars must follow local rules – no permit, no performance!”
Ed Sheeran Halted, Sheeran is in India for a 15-day tour, having already performed in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Upcoming concerts include stops in Shillong and Delhi. In Bengaluru, he surprised fans by singing two popular Telugu songs with singer Shilpa Rao. He had previously collaborated with Indian artist Diljit Dosanjh at a concert in Birmingham last year.
As demand for live music grows in India, Sheeran’s tour marks a significant moment in the country’s expanding concert economy, which is projected to be worth $700-900 million (£550-730 million).
