Research On Muscle Mass: Coffee May Help Protect Muscle Mass In Old Age

Research On Muscle Mass: Research on around eight thousand people has shown that muscle mass in individuals who consumed caffeine-containing coffee or higher levels of caffeine overall was approximately 10 to 15 percent greater.

A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition reveals that drinking coffee positively impacts changes in muscle tissue due to aging. Specifically, this new study suggests that drinking coffee may help prevent the musculoskeletal disease “sarcopenia,” which threatens physical capability, muscle mass, and muscle function with age.

Dr. Luke Kim, a geriatric specialist at Cleveland Clinic, tells Verywell Health, “This observational study found a positive relationship between coffee consumption and muscle mass index.” However, experts emphasize that this study does not apply to everyone. Kim notes that no connection was found between coffee consumption and higher muscle mass in individuals with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI).

Research On Muscle Mass, Researchers conducted this study based on data from over 8,300 participants, collected between 2011 and 2018. The participants were around 40 years old, with more than half being women. The authors assessed the participants’ muscle mass through bone density scans and evaluated their coffee consumption through a questionnaire.

Research On Muscle Mass, Results showed that muscle mass in individuals who consumed caffeine-containing coffee or higher amounts of caffeine overall was approximately 10 to 15 percent greater. According to the results, there is a positive relationship between coffee consumption and skeletal muscle mass in those with a BMI of less than 30. However, experts say this study does not specify reasons and only addresses the correlation between caffeine or coffee consumption and higher muscle mass.

Research On Muscle Mass, Nonetheless, there are several theories regarding the impact of coffee on muscle mass. Researchers believe that coffee contains various anti-inflammatory compounds, and it is known that inflammation is related to reduced muscle mass. Therefore, drinking coffee might reduce body inflammation, thereby decreasing catabolic pathways (overall loss of body mass). Coffee and caffeine may also help maintain “autophagy” – the process of “recycling” old cells – or enhance the function of muscle stem cells.

Since the new research was not focused on younger individuals, it is not easy to say whether coffee is beneficial for their musculoskeletal system. It is also unclear whether other sources of caffeine, aside from coffee, affect muscle mass and to what extent they might be beneficial.

Research On Muscle Mass, Despite the lack of a definitive conclusion on the impact of coffee on muscle mass, experts emphasize the importance of exercise and a healthy diet in middle age and old age, as they help protect the musculoskeletal system.

Research On Muscle Mass, Without healthy muscle mass, the body becomes weaker, making it difficult to perform daily activities. Additionally, reduced muscle mass affects balance and increases the risk of falls. Experts believe that loss of balance and sudden falls are among the leading causes of mortality in older adults.
