These days, the intense summer heat has left many sweating outside and indoors and even while sleeping wet.

According to the New York Post, experts say that sleeping at night with sweat can cause bacteria to accumulate in the pillowcase, making it dirtier than some bathroom and toilet items.

Dr Gareth Nye, director of the medical sciences program, told Wales Online: “Pillowcases can be considered dirtier than toilets.”The good news is that the origin of these bacteria is most likely yours and therefore, they are not harmful.”

Personal Hygiene, This medical expert recommends washing pillowcases and sheets once a week to prevent the accumulation of germs and the growth of bacteria – even if you are the source of these bacteria.

Nay further added that some studies have shown that after a week, the number of bacteria on the pillowcase is 17 thousand more than on the toilet.

According to Real Simple magazine, pillowcases that are not washed will carry an average of 3 million colony-forming units after one week.

Personal Hygiene, According to Nye’s research, most people usually sweat between 500 and 700 mm during the night. However, at least 200 mm of this water is absorbed by bedding or pajamas.

“The body replaces skin cells, which leads to shedding of skin cells,” Nye said. “People lose an average of 500 million skin cells per day (mostly at night), the body also has other secretions, and more fluids are lost through saliva.”

Personal Hygiene, If this issue is neglected, other problems may arise such as the accumulation of fungus or dust mites, which feed on dead skin cells and their excreta cause allergies and asthma.

Nye further added: “The findings of a study have shown that an ordinary pillow has 16 different species of fungi and actually millions of fungal spores.”

Experts recommend airing your beds in the summer season and changing the sheets regularly.

Personal Hygiene, Nye suggests ditching polyester sheets altogether and going for cotton or linen sheets, ditching the comforter and using only the sheets.
