Hearing Problems: Are Noise Canceling Headphones Harmful?
Hearing Problems: Long-term exposure to loud noise can lead to hearing loss, as loud noise damages the cells and membranes of the inner ear.
Audiologists have sounded the alarm using headphones that cancel out ambient noise. They warn that blocking the sound of the environment affects the way sound is processed in the brain and reduces a person’s awareness of his surroundings.
Hearing Problems, Josh Gordon, head of innovation at Singapore’s Jinod technology company, says: “Airpods that cancel out ambient noise may bring a pleasant silence, but they prevent you from hearing essential sounds that might save your life.
Long-term exposure to loud noise, or even just one listening to very loud noise, may lead to hearing loss or loss, as loud noise damages the cells and membranes of the inner ear. In addition to hearing disorders, noise pollution also causes increased stress, high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, and reduced productivity.
Hearing Problems, According to the World Health Organization, adults can safely listen to 80 decibels for 40 hours a week. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the sound of a moving motorcycle is about 90 decibels, while the sound of an approaching train horn and sporting events are 100 decibels.
David McAlpine, scientific director of the hearing unit at Macquarie University in Australia, says: “Loud noise damages hearing, so headphones that cancel out ambient noise are sometimes useful. Of course, the ambient or background sound is necessary for orientation in the environment.
Hearing Problems, According to the New York Post, the noise-canceling headphone market is expected to grow to $45.4 billion by 2031, up from $13.1 billion in 2021.
One of McAlpine’s colleagues conducted a study in 2012 in which 17 participants wore earplugs for a week. Among these participants, 11 people suffered from tinnitus. Tinnitus is caused by a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ear when there is no actual external sound. When these people removed the earplugs, their tinnitus disappeared.
McAlpine recommends using noise-cancelling headphones in construction sites, the military, concerts, or a noisy workplace, such as a coffee shop, to prevent hearing loss or damage.
Hearing Problems, Dr. Ruth Raisman, a clinical audiologist, says that these headphones may be helpful for people with hyperacusis (a rare type of hearing disorder) and autism, but it’s best to limit their use to 2 to 3 hours a day.
