New research shows that drinking carbonated water for weight loss is not necessarily an effective strategy, and its impact is too minimal to be worth trying.
Dr. Akira Takahashi, a physician at a dialysis center in Japan and author of a study published Tuesday in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, explains that this research builds on previous studies and investigates what happens in the body when carbon dioxide enters the bloodstream, including through drinking carbonated water.
Dr. Tara Narula, senior medical correspondent at ABC News, explained the findings of this study on Wednesday during the Good Morning America program, saying that the clinical effect of carbonated water for those aiming to lose weight is very minimal.
Researchers compare the effect of carbonated water to changes in the bodies of patients undergoing dialysis. According to Narula, “When carbon dioxide enters the bloodstream, it affects red blood cells, alters the pH of the blood, and makes the blood more alkaline. In this state, red blood cells can absorb more sugar or glucose, which lowers blood sugar levels. From this perspective, it might aid metabolism.”
Drinking Carbonated Water Help With Weight Loss
This study also addresses the feeling of fullness from consuming carbonated drinks. Narula pointed out that this drink fills the stomach with some gas, which may create a feeling of fullness or reduce hunger. It might also increase bowel movement.
Drinking carbonated water may reduce the tendency to reach for sugary drinks, making it a healthier option when trying to lose weight.
However, she emphasizes that the effect of carbonated water on weight loss is not significant. While she highlights the importance of water in all cellular processes, digestion, and metabolism, she recommends drinking 9 to 12 glasses of plain water daily.
Narula added: “Those who don’t like plain water can opt for carbonated water. Water is part of a healthy lifestyle, but it’s not really a weight-loss solution. A healthy diet and exercise are practical and sustainable strategies for weight loss.”
