A 2020 study found that 90% of makeup products were contaminated with bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, and various fungi. Makeup sponges were the most contaminated items—96% contained fungi, which can cause serious skin issues.

This study examined five categories of makeup products: lipstick, lip gloss, eyeliner, mascara, and makeup sponges. Researchers used microbial cultures to determine contamination levels.

Around 79% to 90% of used makeup products were contaminated with bacteria, with bacterial colonies ranging from 10² to 10³ CFU (Colony Forming Units) per milliliter. For makeup sponges, contamination levels reached an average of 10⁶ CFU per milliliter.
According to British hygiene standards, bacterial contamination below 10⁴ CFU is manageable, but anything beyond this level requires immediate cleaning and disinfection.
The study also found that 93% of multi-purpose makeup sponges had never been cleaned, and worse, 64% were used again after falling on the floor without being washed.
