Ozempic Overweight: Ozempic Also Beneficial For Overweight Individuals With Heart Failure
Ozempic Overweight: Previous research had shown that the weight-loss drug semaglutide helps individuals with heart disease.
A new study has revealed that the cardiovascular benefits of Ozempic may also apply to overweight individuals with heart failure, potentially preventing heart attacks and strokes.
Ozempic Overweight, Previous research had shown that the weight-loss drug semaglutide, sold under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic, could be beneficial for individuals with heart disease who are obese or overweight.
However, there were concerns that this drug might be harmful to individuals with a specific type of heart failure.
Ozempic Overweight, Now, findings from a new study suggest that semaglutide was as effective for individuals with heart failure as it was for those without this condition within a group of heart disease patients.
Earlier findings from the same research group showed that weekly injections of this drug were associated with a 20% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as heart attacks and strokes, in obese or overweight individuals with cardiovascular disease.
Ozempic Overweight, According to the new findings, the use of this weight-loss drug was also associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality in individuals with heart failure.
Experts say this indicates that the drug may have other potential benefits that are still unknown.
Ozempic Overweight: Ozempic Also Beneficial For Overweight Individuals With Heart Failure
Ozempic Overweight, Professor John Deanfield, the lead author of the study from the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science, said, “Our previous analysis in the SELECT (Semaglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes) trial showed that semaglutide was beneficial for individuals with cardiovascular disease who are obese or overweight.”
“The findings of this new study indicate that in the same group, individuals with heart failure performed as well in the outcomes we assessed as those who did not have this condition.”
Ozempic Overweight, “This is important because there were concerns that semaglutide might be harmful to individuals with a type of heart failure known as reduced ejection fraction, where the heart pumps less blood throughout the body.”
“Our findings suggest that the benefits of semaglutide are similar regardless of the type of heart failure.”
Heart failure is a long-term condition that worsens over time. It is usually not curable, but its symptoms can often be managed for years.
Ozempic Overweight, Researchers analyzed data from 4,286 individuals—out of a total of 17,605 in the SELECT trial—who were randomly assigned to receive either semaglutide or a placebo, and their status was followed for an average of over three years.
The researchers found that the drug was associated with a 28% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events—12.3% of the placebo group experienced such events, compared to 9.1% in the semaglutide group.
Ozempic Overweight, The drug was also associated with a 24% reduction in cardiovascular-related mortality in the subgroup with underlying heart failure and a 19% reduction in all-cause mortality.
The exact mechanism by which this drug benefits the heart is still unclear, but researchers suggest it may involve positive effects on blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation, as well as direct effects on the heart muscle and blood vessels.
Ozempic Overweight, The researchers wrote in an article published in The Lancet that the reduction in all-cause mortality in the heart failure groups “suggests the possibility of other benefits that are still unknown.”
Ozempic Overweight, This research was funded by Novo Nordisk, the only company in the United States with FDA-approved products containing semaglutide.
