Hemorrhoids Cause: A Habit That Increases The Risk Of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids Cause: Dr. Schwartzbaum: “Limit the time spent on bowel movements to 10-15 minutes to reduce the risk of hemorrhoids. Also, avoid spending long periods on your phone in the toilet.”

While hemorrhoids are treatable and it is important to see a doctor if you develop them, there is a common bathroom habit that can increase the risk of hemorrhoids. The Huffington Post has compiled recommendations and explanations from several gastroenterology specialists on this topic.

Hemorrhoids Cause: The Habit That Contributes To Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids Cause

Hemorrhoids Cause, Dr. David L. Schwartzbaum, a gastroenterologist, says, “Hemorrhoids are actually blood vessels in the lower rectum and anus that everyone has, but the problem arises when these blood vessels become enlarged or inflamed, which depends on several factors. One of these factors is sitting on the toilet for too long. The reason is that when a person’s buttocks are on the toilet seat, blood pools in the lowest point, increasing pressure on the blood vessels in the anus, leading to hemorrhoids.”

Dr. Prasun Shah, another gastroenterologist, adds that when you sit on the toilet for longer than necessary, gravity works against you and weakens blood circulation. Prolonged sitting can disrupt blood flow in and out of the lower rectal area, leading to blood pooling in the veins and causing them to swell.

It’s important to note that just as prolonged sitting on the toilet can lead to hemorrhoids, excessive straining during bowel movements can also cause hemorrhoids. Therefore, this is not an ideal method for reducing the time spent on the toilet.

Hemorrhoids Cause, Schwartzbaum explains that straining during bowel movements also increases pressure on the anorectal blood vessels and is another common cause of hemorrhoids. He advises his patients to go to the toilet when they feel the need to have a bowel movement and avoid straining. If they are unable to relieve themselves, they should get up and return later when they feel the need again.

So, What Is The Ideal Time To Spend On The Toilet?

Hemorrhoids Cause, Schwartzbaum says, “I generally recommend limiting the time spent on bowel movements to 10-15 minutes to reduce the risk of hemorrhoids. Also, avoid prolonged phone browsing or reading in the toilet.”
