New Research: At Least Half Of Cancers Are Preventable

Cancers Are Preventable: Smoking is one of the most important factors in developing lung cancer, and by avoiding it, we can prevent this diseases.

Smoking, drinking alcohol, physical inactivity and many other easily avoidable risk factors are associated with almost half of all cancers in adulthood.

There is more evidence to support the old belief that “lifestyle greatly affects the risk of developing certain cancers.” So that the results of the latest study of the American Cancer Society, which was published last week, estimates that 40% of new cancer cases and 40% of cancer deaths in people 30 years and older can be avoided by avoiding lifestyle and high-risk habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol.

Cancers Are Preventable, According to a 2019 study, 40 percent of the 1.8 million cancers in people 30 and older are caused by “potentially modifiable risk factors.” The researchers examined patients with about 30 types of cancer, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer.

According to this research, among the key risk factors, smoking had the greatest impact, and lung cancer was one of the cases that could be prevented more than any other cancer by changing lifestyle.

Farhad Islami, senior director of cancer disparities research at the American Cancer Society and lead author of the study, told USA Today: “Despite the significant decline in smoking in the United States over the past several decades, the number of lung cancer deaths attributable to smoking remains high. It’s still concerning.”

Cancers Are Preventable, The researchers also looked at other potential risk factors, including being overweight, alcohol consumption, inactivity, diet and infections such as HPV (genital warts), and analyzed 18 risk factors in 30 types of cancer that are reasonably controllable. According to the study, these risk factors contributed to 700,000 new cases of cancer and more than 262,000 deaths.

Dr. Arif Kamal, chief patient officer at the American Cancer Society, told CNN: “With these things in mind, people can reduce their risk of developing cancer by making daily lifestyle changes.”

Cancers Are Preventable, For example, this study referred to 10 types of cancer that controlling “avoidable risk factors” led to 80% prevention of new cases. Among them, 90% of melanoma skin cancer cases were caused by the effect of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, and almost all cases of uterine cancer were related to HPV infection. The first case can be prevented by better protection of the skin from sunlight, such as using sunscreen, and the second case can be prevented by injecting a vaccine.
